Residential dog training should offer your dog the chance to have behaviour therapy as well as obedience training. This balance is not offered by some companies who only offer obedience help entirely on their own premises. In most cases, owners are looking to be able to walk safely in public with unknown people and dogs and to enjoy a normal life.
Ask the right questions before paying for this type of training. Where will the training be done? Are there previous clients you can talk to? Is handover done in real life or only in their training field? What ongoing support is there? Will shock or prong collars be used? Will you get a training plan to follow at home?
Residential training is not a cure all that means you don’t have work to do. It should offer the ability to take your dog into the environment or situation that was previously a problem and see the dog under control and calm. It should not be handed back in the same field or room, with the same people and dogs around that it has been training with. You should get a handover plan and have to send regular updates in order to ensure the training is secure.
We offer residential help in two ways. Either you can come and stay locally and work for 2 or three days 1-2-1 with us, or leave your dog for 3 weeks and have a day or two handover at the end and ongoing support. We give your dog a mixture of playtime, training and behaviour therapy.
Our main base is now in East Midlands near to Melton Mowbray, A house that stands alone, access to walks and a paddock that means lots of training and fun before needing to go into the real world to test and practise. The Vale of Belvoir offers a range of lovely pubs, hotels and guest houses between Melton Mowbray and Grantham. Easy access to the A1, dog friendly pubs and local markets. Have a break for yourself too!
We do not use shock or prong collars or harsh methods. We want you to learn to communicate with your dog effectively and help you all to understand how to get a balanced relationship.
My own dogs live and sleep in the house with the mad cats. An affectionate relationship is part of why I have pets. Residential training can help if you are struggling because of time or experience, or if your dog has serious issues that you’ve tried to solve.
